It’s common for people to go through life wishing things were different. They wish they were thinner, more successful, or more popular. But the truth is, we can wish for things all day and they won’t come to fruition unless we actually take action to change ourselves.
Einstein said, “We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking that we used when we created them”. This statement could be true for almost any problem in life, including your weight loss efforts. Think about the type of thinking you used when you gained weight. This type of thinking is often responsible for causing weight gain. But it’s erroneous thinking, so reversing it won’t automatically cause weight loss. That just leads to a cycle of yo-yo dieting, with your weight cycling up and down, and it wreaks havoc on your metabolism. Yes, one more donut will hurt. No, you probably won’t exercise extra tomorrow, because something else will come up or you’ll forget. No, you can’t just eat less and have the weight magically fall off when you feel like it.
The problem with this thinking is that it’s too simplistic and leads to making excuses for our bad habits. So as Einstein said, you can’t solve your weight problem by using the same thinking that got you here. Instead, you have to put a new system of thought in place. You have to learn to focus on your health, rather than an alternating cycle of indulgence and deprivation. You have to motivate yourself in a brand new way, instead of focusing on rewards and punishments. When you see healthy food and exercise as a punishment, of course you won’t stick with any diet regimen!
That’s why adopting a brand new mindset and a new healthy lifestyle are the keys to losing the weight and keeping it off.
