The holidays are a busy time for all of us, and it can seem tempting to skip a few workouts in favor of shopping or work parties. But skipping exercise can be dangerous for two reasons:
- Once you get out of the habit, it can be harder to get started again
- You’re likely to be consuming a few more calories than normal, due to holiday treats, so now is the worst time to miss your regular workouts.
So, whatever you do, don’t give up on your exercise goals during the holidays! Try these tactics instead, and keep your weight loss goals on track.
Switch to mornings. If you can, change over to a morning exercise routine for the next month. It’s easier to procrastinate on exercise toward the end of the day, when you’re tired from work and have holiday activities to do. Get it done first thing in the morning, so you don’t feel tempted to cheat later.
Make yourself a priority. Your weight loss goals are important for your health, and should take precedence in your life. Remember that it’s okay to say no if you’re asked to take on more responsibilities than you can realistically handle. You don’t have to go to every party or be in charge of every gift exchange.
Skip the gym. If driving to the gym in busy holiday traffic takes up too much of your time, remember that you can exercise at home. Most of the best toning exercises make use of your own body weight rather than fancy equipment (lunges, squats, crunches, planks and pushups). Go for a walk or bike ride around your neighborhood. Run around the park with the kids.
Put your chores to work. When you must indulge in holiday shopping, park far from the entrance to the mall. When you’re finished shopping, power-walk a lap or two around the mall while carrying your heavy bags.
